My Bet Calculator

Grand National bet calculator

The Grand National at Aintree has one of the biggest fields of the year, with up to 40 runners, so each-way terms and non-runners matter more than usual.

Each-way in a big field

With so many runners, the standard terms for a large handicap pay a quarter of the odds for the first four places. Many bookmakers offer more places than that, which changes the value of an each-way bet, so check the terms on your slip. The each-way terms finder shows the standard ones, and you can set the fraction for each horse in the calculator.

Non-runners

Horses often come out of big races. If a horse in a multiple bet does not run, it is taken out and its stake comes back, so a Lucky 15 pays like a Lucky 7. Mark the horse as a non-runner in the calculator to see the new total.

A worked example

A £2 each-way bet at 20/1 costs £4. If the horse is placed but does not win, on 1/4 terms the place bet returns £12.00, a profit of £8.00. If it wins, you also collect the win bet.

Rule 4 and non-runners

Bets placed on the day are affected by Rule 4: if a horse is withdrawn after you bet, pence are taken off every £1 of your winnings, depending on the withdrawn horse's price. Ante-post bets, placed well before the race, are not affected in the same way. Put the Rule 4 price or the pence figure in the calculator and it works out the difference. Examples use made-up odds and are not tips. Your bookmaker's own terms decide what you are paid.
